Young Adult Therapy

No longer a kid; technically, an adult, but not quite feeling like a grown up yet…?

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and unsure of ourselves during these years.

Fresh out of high school or college? Not sure what comes next, or what to do with yourself?

Maybe you’re a young professional jumping into your chosen profession for the first time, and now it “counts.” Maybe you have just gotten married or just had your first child?

Transitions in general are stressful, and there are some major transitions that take place between the ages of 18 through mid to late 20s:

  • Graduating from high school
  • Moving out of a parent’s house
  • Exploring career options
  • Going to college
  • Joining the military
  • Serving your country
  • Going to a trade school or training program
  • Balancing work and school
  • Paying lots of bills for the first time
  • Graduating again
  • Getting a first job in your chosen field
  • Going on to graduate school, law school, medical school
  • Entering the work force as a professional
  • Moving to new cities
  • Meeting new friends and finding a new peer group
  • Getting married or getting serious in a relationship
  • Having a baby

I’m sure there are many I missed, but the point is, these are years full of exciting, stressful, challenging, scary moments.

Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end.

There is a song by Semisonic, Closing Time, with the line “Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end.”

Think about that line…Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end. It explains so many of the mixed feelings we often feel in these transitions.

Happy to graduate, but terrified of failing? Excited about getting married, but missing being single? Thrilled to be a new parent, but exhausted and lamenting the days when you could still sleep in on the weekends?

Maybe you’re just feeling really unsure of yourself right now. Unsure what you want to do with your life or who you really want to be? Unsure how to be you?

“Have patience with everything unresolved in your heart and to try to love the questions themselves as if they were locked rooms or books written in a very foreign language. Don’t search for the answers, which could not be given to you now, because you would not be able to live them. And the point is to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps then, someday far in the future, you will gradually, without even noticing it, live your way into the answer.”

― Rainer Maria Rilke

As exciting as these years, and new adult experiences can be, it’s very common for people to also feel a great deal of anxiety, grief, loss, and fear.

Among the issues I typically see within this age group are people struggling with anxiety, depression, family of origin issues, trauma, self-esteem, eating disorders, body image, relationship issues, alcohol, and self-harm.

Sometimes it’s just helpful to process thoughts and feelings. Get feedback and resources. Start feeling grounded again. Other times, the support and the help that’s needed is deeper.

If you are struggling with body image or eating disordered behaviors, severe depression, trauma, or self-harm, therapy will be more intense and will address these issues and behaviors specifically.

My message is hope.

My goal is always to help you find your voice, speak your truth, and to feel empowered.
